8 things every person should do before 8 am to be successful
8 things every person should do before 8 am to be successful8 things every person should do before 8 am to be successfulWe would rather be ruined than changedWe would rather die in our dreadThan climb the cross of the momentAnd let our illusions die. - W. H. AudenMost peoples lives are a reflection of their past, rather than their future. For fruchtwein people, today will look quite similar to tomorrow. 2019 will look similar to 2018.Most peoples lives are highly predictable. And theres a very good reason.Your brain is quite literally a prediction machinedesigned to keep you from situations and scenarios filled with uncertainty and possibility of failure.FollowLadders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard coveringHappiness,Productivity,Job Satisfaction,Neuroscience, andmoraAccording to several psychologists, the foundation of all fears is the unknown. We want our lives to be predictable. We dont want to deal with the intense emotions involved in doing something new and diff erent.Trying something new and attempting to change your life will, without a doubt, cause anxiety. But according to the philosopher, Sren Kierkegaard,To venture causes anxiety, but not to venture is to lose ones self. Anxiety is the dizziness of freedom. In order to move forward in your life, youll need to embrace difficulty and uncertainty - or what you might typically consider anxiety which Kierkegaard called the dizziness of freedom.Embracing a bigger future is how you change. And according to Albert Einstein,The measure of intelligence is the ability to change. The only way to change is to stop explaining your life by your past and to departure explaining your life based on your future. You get to design your life and your future. But in order to do so, you must stop living from your past.Today cant be the same as what happened yesterday. The food you ate today, if you really want to get healthy, probably cant be what you ate yesterday.Stop repeating the past.Rather than repeating the behavior of your past, you need to act today based on the life you want to have tomorrow. If youwait for tomorrowto abflug acting how you should today, then you really are just repeating yesterday. As Professor Harold Hill has said - You pile up enough tomorrows, and youll find you are left with nothing but a lot of empty yesterdays.Developing Confidence And Changing Your LifeYou cannot have confidence in your life without positively moving forward toward a bigger and better future. If youre days, weeks, and years are a repeating of the past, then youre not confident.Living a comfortable and predictable life is actually a clear reflection of your lack of confidence. You can only have confidence after youve begun living a better life - and then, that confidence allows you to think bigger about what is possible.Confidence is the byproduct of prior success. This is one of the reasons it is completely essential that you begin your morning with a routine. The purpose of a morning rout ine is to get yourself moving toward your grand and exciting future. If you dont have an exciting future that youre working toward, then you are literally stuck in the past. And when stuck in the past, you cannot change your life, but only repeat the patterns that got you here. When you repeat the patterns that got you here, youll have a lot of empty yesterdays. When you start the day in a higher and more powerful way, youll immediately begin turning your future a different direction from your past. With this short morning routine, your life will quickly change. It may seem like a long list. But in short, its really quite simpleWake upGet confidence and motivationGet inspired and connectedGet perspectiveGet movingAct courageouslyMove powerfully toward your dreamsPut the right food in your bodyLets begin1. Get A Healthy 7+ Hours of SleepThe National Sleep Foundation (NSF) conducted surveys revealing that at least 40 million Americans suffer from over 70 different sleep disorders. Not onl y that, 60 percent of adults, and 69 percent of children, experience one or more sleep problems a few nights or more during a week.In addition, more than 40 percent of adults experience daytime sleepiness severe enough to interfere with their daily activities at least a few days each month - with 20 percent reporting problem sleepiness a few days a week or more.On the flip side, getting a healthy amount of sleep is linked toIncreased memoryLonger lifeDecreased inflammationIncreased creativityIncreased attention and focusDecreased fat and increased muscle mass with exerciseLower stressDecreased dependence on stimulants like caffeineDecreased risk of getting into accidentsDecreased risk of depressionAnd tons more google it.The very act of waking up earlier will create an enormous sense of motivation in your life.Like confidence, motivation is the byproduct of action. You cant be motivated without taking positive steps forward toward a desired future. As Harvard psychologist, Jerome Br uner said, Youre more likely to act yourself into feeling than feeling yourself into action.Waking up early has the power of making you psychologically bulletproof. If you wake up early and - rather than getting sucked into the distraction of your smartphone or the addiction to stimulants - you start vividly imagining your desired future and boldly acting toward that future.Motivation is something you must create every day. You can only be motivated if youre moving forward.2. Prayer and Meditation to Facilitate Clarity and AbundanceWhen you change the way you see things, the things you see change. - Dr. Wayne DyerAfter waking from a healthy and restful sleep session, prayer and meditation are crucial for orienting yourself toward the positive. What you focus on expands.Prayer and meditation facilitate intense gratitude for all that you have. Gratitude is having an abundance mindset. When you think abundantly, the world is your oyster. There is limitless opportunity and a possibili ty for you.People are magnets. When youre grateful for what you have, you will attract more of the positive and good. Gratitude is contagious.Gratitude may be the fruchtwein important key to success. It has been called the mother of all virtues. If you start every morning putting yourself in a space of gratitude and clarity, you will attract the best the world has to offer, and not get distracted.3. Write In Your Journal For 515 MinutesWhen you write down your dreams in vivid detail, you begin to engage both your conscious and subconscious minds. Drawing out your dreams in the form of a mind-map is also very powerful for engaging both sides of your brain.Writing down your dreams and deeply visualizing them will make them more emotional for you. Until your dreams become emotional, they wont be powerful enough. You need to reconstruct your identity and memory by developing a new and emotionally-driven vision of your future. As you write your dreams down every single day, write down the ways in which you will actually achieve those dreams. As you write down your dreams and goals, the right people will start popping into your mind. A key part of your success will be learning how to position yourself such that you can connect and collaborate with the right WHOs.Youll need to first develop lots of personal capability yourself in order to be someone worth connecting and collaborating with. You need toMake a firm and committed decision about what you want to become a master ofEmbrace fully the process of developmentOnly care about what certain people think and ignore everyone elseBecome so good you cannot be ignoredHelp the right people further their goalsInvest in the right mentorshipsMake it about your mentors goalsBe a giverNever lose track of your WHYNever become complacent about the success you experienceMake huge requestsAsk to collaborate with your heroes once youve established credibility and helped them in incredible waysAll of this stuff can and should happen i n your journal long before it occurs in reality. You then act and continue acting in powerful ways and watch as your journal entries become more vivid and clear. Watch as your goals become realities quicker and quicker and quicker.4. Hard Physical ActivityDespite endless evidence of the need for exercise, only one-third of American men and women between the ages of 25 to 64 years engage in regular physical activity according to the Center for Disease Controls National Health Interview Survey. If you want to be among the healthy, happy, and productive people in the world, get in the habit of regular exercise. Many people go immediately to the gym to get their body moving. I have lately found that doing yard work in the wee hours of the morning generates an intense inflow of inspiration and clarity.Whatever your preference, get your body moving.Exercise has been found to decrease your chance of depression, anxiety, and stress. It is also related to higher success in your career. If you dont care about your body, every other aspect of your life will suffer. Humans are holistic beings.5. Act CourageouslyA persons success in life can usually be measured by the number of uncomfortable conversations he or she is willing to have. - Tim FerrissBut you dont have to constantly be battling your fears. Actually,Darren Hardyhas said that you can be a coward 99.9305556% of the time (to be exact). You only need to be courageous for 20 seconds at a time.Twenty seconds of fear is all you need. If you courageously confront fear for 20 seconds every single day, before you know it, youll be in a different socio-economic and social situation.Make that call.Ask that question.Pitch that idea.Post that video.Whatever it is you feel you want to dodo it. The anticipation of the event is far more painful than the event itself. So just do it and end the inner-conflict.In most cases, your fears are unfounded. AsSeth Godinhas explained, our comfort zone and our safety zone are not the same t hings. It is completely safe to make an uncomfortable phone call. You are not going to die. Dont equate the two. Recognize that most things outside your comfort zone are completely safe. You cant change your life without courage. If you start every morning by doing something courageous, then your life will quickly change.6. Listen to/Read Uplifting ContentOrdinary people seek entertainment. Extraordinary people seek education and learning. It is common for the worlds most successful people to read at least one book per week. They are constantly learning.I can easily get through one audiobook per week by just listening during my commute to school and while walking on campus.Taking even 1530 minutes every morning to read uplifting and instructive information changes you. It puts you in the zone to perform at your highest.Over a long enough period of time, you will have read hundreds of books. Youll be knowledgeable on several topics. Youll think and see the world differently. Youll be a ble to make more connections between different topics.7. Do At Least One Thing Towards Long-Term GoalsWillpower is like a muscle that depletes when it is exercised. Similarly, our ability to make high-quality decisions becomes fatigued over time. The more decisions you make, the lower quality they become - the weaker your willpower.Consequently, you need to do the hard stuff first thing in the morning. The important stuff. If you dont, it simply will not get done. By the end of your day, youll be exhausted. Youll be fried. There will be a million reasons to just start tomorrow. And you will start tomorrow - which is never. So your mantra becomesThe worst comes first.Do that thing youve been needing to do. Then do it again tomorrow. If you take just one step toward your big goals every day, youll realize those goals werent really far away.8. Invest In Your Key RelationshipsIn addition to moving your own life forward, youll want to deepen the connections with those you love.Your relati onships are a very clear indicator of your quality of life and character.Relationships should be viewed as an investment rather than a cost. When they are viewed as an investment, then you start putting more into them. You start seeing their potential for growth and development. When you invest in key relationships - both personal and professional - your life starts to change. According to Joe Polish, Life gives to the giver and takes from the taker. If during your mornings, you proactively do something kind, thoughtful, and useful to someone important in your life, youll feel far more joy. Youll also likely make huge progredienz toward your goals, because the more successful you become, the more your success depends on your relationships.ConclusionAfter youve done this, no matter what you have for the rest of your day, youll have done the important stuff first. Youll have put yourself in a place to succeed. Youll have inched toward your dreams.Because youll have done all these thin gs, youll show up better in life. Youll be better at your job. Youll be better in your relationships. Youll be happier. Youll be more confident. Youll be more bold and daring. Youll have more clarity and vision.Your life will shortly change. You cant have mornings like this consistently without waking up to all that is incongruent in your life. Those things you despise will meet their demise. Theyll disappear and never return.Youll quickly find youre doing the work youre passionate about.Your relationships will be passionate, meaningful, deep, and funYou will have freedom and abundance. The world, and the universe will respond to you in beautiful ways.Ready toUpgrade?Ive created a cheat sheet for putting yourself into a PEAK-STATE, immediately. The Resume and Getting it Ready for the Job Search
The Resume and Getting it Ready for the Job SearchThe Resume and Getting it Ready for the Job SearchThe Resume and Getting it Ready for the Job SearchCourtesy of William Iven from unsplash.comGetting started on the resume can often be one of the fruchtwein difficult parts of the job search. Resumes, in the beginning, can seem tedious and time-consuming. You may be unsure of what to do, always keep in mind that resume writing is not as difficult as it sounds, as it is often the resume targeting that can present the most challenges. Before you begin your job search, you need to make sure that you have a solid document prepared, while you will be tailoring your professional resume to each job you apply for, you need to make sure you have a strong kusine resume. The base resume is your starting point to apply to various jobs. Do not be overly concerned with extremely fancy wording. While your resume should have business vocabulary, verbs, industry keywords, avoid jargon, use language that is interpretable and will explain directly what you have accomplished and worked on in your career. The main task of a resume is to get you noticed, employers will be looking for more elaborate explanations of your experience through the interview process and testing that they require of their candidates.Tailoring the presentation is the most important task when conducting your job search. Taking the time to cultivate a resume that is precise and in conjunction with the position you want to apply for, will assist in landing you more interviews. Each employer wants to feel like you took the time out to directly address their needs individually. When tailoring a resume always includeKey phrases and words , never copy and paste the qualifications from the job posting, use your own writing style to tell the employer what you can provide, based on your experience and the qualifications the employer is looking for in a candidate.Use their tone, if they are more serious, keep the resume se rious and so on.Tell information that is relevant, go into detailed descriptions only where necessary.UNDERSTANDING RESUME STYLES There are three types of resumes chronological, combinational and functional. Each resume serves a purpose and will provide a specific benefit based on your career objectives and situation.Chronological Resume This is the most common kind of a resume. It commonly includes an objective or profile, professional qualifications section, software and technical sections, education and awards and your experience. Your job description should include the company, position title, dates worked and city worked in. Always begin with the most recent job and work back no later than ten years. Each job description should contain 6 to 8 bullet points. How to Customize Your Resume for Each Job Application
How to Customize Your Resume for Each Job ApplicationHow to Customize Your Resume for Each Job Application56customizing your resume has become just like brushing your teeth a necessity that ultimately welcomes the prospect of meeting and interacting with someone face-to-face.So what is this customizing and how can you be sure youre doing it right? Weve developed five simple ways you can custom tailor your resume and impress a potential employer. Here are five ways you can customize your resume for each job applicationCustomize your title Most professionals resort to creating an objective section at the top of their resume, but this is a resume faux pas. Its now considered best practice to start out your resume with a title and summary of qualifications that reflect your areas of expertise in some way.Your top header can be as easy as writing your current job title or you can directly insert the title of the position youre applying for. If youre feeling extra ambitious, you can try bot h The header should be centered and bold at the top of the resume (under your name and contact information) and resemble something to the effect of Project Controls Engineer Senior Planning Scheduling SpecialistCustomize your value statement/summary of qualificationsAfter your title, include a brief summary of qualifications that can be easily tailored by inserting key terms and phrases from the job posting. Is there a particular qualification or responsibility listed in the job advertisement that resonates with you? Include it You can even go as far as copying the phrase directly to really hit the keywords like you mean it.If youre a marketing manager, for example, include the fact that you have 5+ years of experience in a marketing management role with a proven ability to develop innovative strategies to achieve desired market positions for various brands. I wrote that by combining phrases from the minimum requirements and essential functions sections of a job posting. To amplif y your chance of getting an interview, back up each statement in your summary of qualification with a brief, measurable example.Print out the job advertisementYoull be surprised at how having a hard copy of the job description can really help you. Once printed, read the document closely and highlight every verb (action word) you see. When finished, youll have a highlighted document with key terms like managing, implementing, and analyzing. Now use a pen to underline all nouns, such as marketing campaigns, operations teams, and budgets. These highlighted and underlined words are terms that you need to include in your resume. To make life easier, include a core skills and competencies section and mix and match the verbs and nouns by creating a bulleted list that looks something like thisCustomize your professional experience to reflect phrases and terms in the job postingSince you need to do this for every job you apply to, its best to keep one generic resume saved on your desktop that you can add relevant responsibilities to. Remember to save your changes as a new document so that your original, generic version doesnt get lost. This process is as simple as adding a key phrase from the job posting and offering a brief highlight or accomplishment to quantify your ability to perform the task. Example Provide exceptional ongoing service to customers, as evidenced by two consecutive years of 100 percent customer satisfaction rating.Include company information or evidence that you did research on the organizationThis is a direct indication that you created a custom resume just for the employer. You can go to the companys website to research their mission statement, read recent news coverage, and review annual reports.Tie in the fact that youre excited at the prospect of working in an environment that rewards creativity, strategic thinking, and the willingness to go the extra mile for every project and youll really impress the hiring manager at Apple. (This phrase was t aken directly from the Apple website and took less than 2 minutes to find.)The goal is to show that you align directly with the companys values and overall culture. It may seem daunting and time-consuming at first, but with a bit of practice youll be shooting off resumes and scheduling job interviews in no timeReaders, what do you do to customize your resume for each job application? Why personal development will make you feel miserable
Why personal development will make you feel miserableWhy personal development will make you feel miserableWe cant ignore problems - we just need to approach them from the other side. - Cooperider WhitneyLife is a never-ending puzzle. The moment you figured out something, a new challenge arises. Thus, personal development is a perpetual quest - becoming the best version of yurself requires everyday practice. But theres a dark side to personal development some approaches are manipulative - they make you feel theres something wrong about you. This dark side approach - in the form of a book, workshop or video - encurages an obsession toward perfection. It forces us to compare to others. And promotes unrealistic expectations. We end thinking we are elend good enough. The dark side to personal development promises you a better future at the expense of enjoying your present. Avoid any approach that offers bedrngnishing but rehashing your vast inadequacies. You are not a problem to be sol ved - your life is something to be discovered, not to be fixed.Discover the other side. You are not a problemTheres only one thing Im certain about I dont have everything figured out. That I coach teams, facilitate workshops or write about change and personal growth doesnt mean I have all the answers.Ive learned a lot in my life and throughout my career. The most important lesson is that things dont go our way most of the times. Its not always easy. But realizing that things dont go wrong just because of me has helped me a lot. I reflect and think of how I can improve my behavior. But I dont blame myself.Im not a problem to be solved (you are not either). Most of us were brought up thinking theres something inherently wrong with us. Most educational, religious, and psychological approaches operate under the premise that people have a problem. And that we need to be cured. The belief that we need to be fixed harms our growth. We pursue unrealistic expectations Having goals and challenges is good, but letting other people define your achievements is not healthy. Pleasing others is a moving target - you end pleasing no one, yourself included. We get deckenfries in whats wrong Approaching your life as a problem makes you focus on whats not working. We are all full of flaws and imperfections, but we are more than that. We need to see the other (positive) side to improve. We compare ourselves to others Seeing other people as inspiration or role models is good, but using others as a bar is deceiving. We are never good enough. We end seeing the good in others and whats wrong with us.We end taking take ourselves too seriously, as I wrote here. What if we start considering ourselves (and our lives) from a place of abundance rather than of deficit?Leverage your uniqueness. Appreciate your personality, strengths, emotions, experiences, and happiness - your positivity lifes assets.A positivity frameworkThe negative screams at you but the positive only whispers. - Barbara Fredr icksonYour emotions affect your outlook. A positivity framework encourages building on whats already working instead of being obsessed about what we need to fix.Negative emotions narrow our momentary thought and action repertoire. When we feel fear, we focus our attention and energy on surviving - we want to get rid (or run away) from the menace.Positive emotions are more effective - they encourage new ways of thinking and action. However, as positive emotions dont emerge when under attack, we dont give them their deserved value - we are used to paying more attention to our problems than to whats working.Psychologist Barbara Fredrickson extensive research discovered that positive emotions provide two key benefitsOpen our minds they increase awareness and expand our peripheral visionBuild resilience they prepare us to bounce back from adversity.Fredricksons Broaden-and-Build theory states that positive emotions allow people to step back and see the bigger picture. Research validate s how positivity feelings widen the scope of what we see - they help us discover more ideas and possibilities.According to the expert, there is a whole range of emotions that change the boundaries of our mind. Like being grateful, feeling inspired by great leaders, being in tune with our environment, sharing laughter with a friend, or feeling the love and closeness of people we care for.Multiple studies show that giving a bag of candy or asking people to remember a positive emotion before a test or a job interview dramatically impacts their performance.Unfortunately, positivity fades quickly. We must increase our daily intake of positive emotions.Fredrickson recommends a 3-to-1 positivity ratio - that proportion can predict flourishing. 80% of Americans fall short. You can take the quiz and see how you score. The impact of positivity goes well beyond your mood. The psychologist explains how positive emotions affect our cells development too. By broadening our awareness, they change who we are in the future. The best of what you areWhat lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us. - Ralph Waldo EmersonWe grow in the direction of what we persistently focus on.Encouraging positive emotions promotes an appreciation mindset - we acknowledge the good stuff in our lives.Rather than focusing on what we need to fix, we can leverage the best of what has been and what is.Thats the approach behind Appreciation Inquiry, a change management methodology grounded in theories from organizational behavior, sociology and psychology. Its principles can be applied to personal development too.Appreciation Inquiry is the act of recognizing the best in yourself and the world around you. It uses questions to uncover whats working - it encourages amplifying the good, instead of ruminating on whats wrong. The process includes four stagesDiscovery To find, emphasize, and illuminate any factors that have led to the best in a given situation. W hat gives life? Focus on appreciating whats working for you.Dream Its about challenging the status-quo and imagining possibilities - you begin to dream of what could be or needs to be. What might be? Visualize an exciting future state.Design You focus on creating what you want and how your ideal scenario could work. Its about identifying concrete and actionable ideas that will move you closer to your dream. How can it be? Define how the dream would look like.Destiny An invitation to construct your future - its the commitment toward your aspiration. You involve those who will help you get there as well. What will be? Craft an actionable plan and make it happen.Appreciation Inquiry helps us cultivate the best within ourselves - broaden your possibilities. The other side of personal developmentFind the goodness that is already within you. - Eckhart TolleThe dark side of personal development is built on certainty - it provides truism and advice regardless of the context. The other s ide encourages you to find the answer - questions uncover what is working and will work for you.Inquiries provide direction - they move us from ignorance through curiosity to discovery. Most questions are loaded - they carry a constructive or destructive purpose. Beautiful questions invite us to see ourselves and our reality through a different lens - we dont judge the question, we want to find better answers. Our culture prioritizes certainty over curiosity. Most people feel intimidated - they fear being seen as ignorant if they ask questions. The power of Appreciative Inquiry lies in seeing questions to acknowledge the positive, stimulate reflection, and notice what is valuable. You are expected and encouraged to ask questions. AI creates a pathway to inspire, intrigue, excite, discover, invite, and co-create.Here are some questions to get you started.1. Identify High-PointsThink back through your life (or career). What has been a high-point experience when you felt most alive, successful, and effective. Describe how you felt, and what made the situation possible. What are the most significant stories in your life?Where are things going well in your life?Where are you making a difference?2. Understand the WhyWhy did it happen that way? Examine Beliefs, Values, Perceptions. What stories were you telling yourself or images were you portraying in your mind that led you toward the outcomes? When has that happened other times?3. What You Value MostWithout being humble, what do you value most about yourself (or your work or your organization)?4. Apply LearningsWhat can you continue doing to keep amplifying the good? What can you begin to do to move your life (or team) in the direction of our greatest desires? What can you stop doing because it no longer serves or gets in the way?How would you apply the learnings elsewhere?5. Dream The FutureDescribe your three concrete wishes for the future of your life (or organization). Imagine the future three years from now.Whats happening that makes it vibrant and successful? What has changed? What has stayed the same? How have you contributed to this future?- - - The dark side of personal development wants to make you think theres something wrong with you. But theres not. You have flaws - just like me and everybody else.Positivity not only expands your mind - it helps you discover the good within you. Focus on whats working, not on what needs to be fixed. The Core of Successful Careers
The Core of Successful Careers While things such as a well-written resume, strong recommendations and a college degree will assist you in becoming a success, it is truly the intangibles which make or break a career. Even though you cant put your wisdom, positive outlook on life and business or your perceived people skills on your cover letter without coming across as over-generalized, they are the core of your successful career. As a matter of fact, in your consciousness, you can tap a reservoir of boundless power, energy, intelligence, drive and resiliency. Its aspects like this that are crucial. Things like a LinkedIn profile are much less key than you may think.Setting Yourself Up for a Successful Career To set yourself up for success, you must return to the basics. The tips I am about to provide are not groundbreaking, though failure to comply with them can eventually be career shattering1. Sto p believing in defeat. When you think about defeat, you tend to receive what you anticipate. When you think only about obstacles, you never find the solutions.Obstacles, regardless of how insurmountable they may appear, can all be taken care of with faith, guts and a willingness to work. In reservierung to be successful, learn to never be afraid of an obstacle. Begin to realize that you have the power to handle more roadblocks than you probably give yourself credit for.2. Know that worrying leads to insecurity, which leads to wasted time. There are very few guarantees in life. Yet, you can be certain that you will not be able to eliminate bad events (major or minor), which will happen throughout our career. While we cant eradicate these mishaps entirely, we can prevent the needless debilitation caused by worrying. Worrying will lead professionals to retreat from taking risks, forming key professional relationships and will systematically strip the individual of their confidence and a bility to produce.Instead of worrying about whether a client is going to sign the contract or if your boss is going to give you a raise, learn to live in the moment. Begin to see that you cant control every outcome.Simply let each day unfold and focus on the tasks and accomplishments you are working on at that given moment. No more, no less.3. Know that success or failure is all in your head. Often, the way you think about your professional career, your abilities and your co-workers will affect not only your mind, but also your body. For instance, if you think a particular goal is too much work, you will notice that your body will accept that fact and become fatigued. Conversely, if your mind is intensely interested in your job and in achieving particular goals, you can continue that activity indefinitely. The business world favors efficient, outgoing and energetic individuals. Becoming one begins with how we perceive a situation. Begin to think in a positive manner and soon you will become immune to your body, mind and spirit becoming depleted. In the End A resume may be your ticket in, but the rest of the journey to becoming a successful professional rests with your thought process, belief system and perception.

6 Ways for a Project Manager to Build Team Accountability6 Ways for a Project Manager to Build Team AccountabilityAccountability is critical to every projects success. Accountability does not mean a project manager must babysit, micromanage or browbeat people to get things done. Such tactics cause strife and animosity toward the project manager. Rather than being the only person unternehmensverbund people accountable, the project manager empowers the entire gruppe to uphold the projects accountability. While the project manager has the important responsibility of establishing an environment of accountability, project team members have the responsibilities to hold themselves and each other accountable. Instead of the project manager going it alone on accountability, the entire team participates. Here are six ways to build accountability into a project 01Address Accountability at the Kickoff MeetingTetra Images/Getty ImagesIf handling poor performance one-on-one does not work, the projec t manager must escalate the issue to the team members supervisor. If that fails, the project sponsor will need to step into the situation.Addressing one-on-one, escalating to the supervisor and escalating to the sponsor is the best order of handling poor performance by a project team member. Skipping a step could alienate those involved and ultimately waste time. Before taking an issue to the project sponsor, a project manager should exhaust all other options. In the case of poor performance, this means addressing the situation one-on-one and then appealing to the team members supervisor. The project manager should be specific with the project sponsor about what the project manager recommends the project sponsor do. If the project manager wants the team member counseled by a second line manager, the project manager should say so.If the project manager wants the team member replaced, the project manager should make such a request. The project sponsor needs options and the pros and cons of each option.

How to manage your finances when you are married
How to manage your finances when you are married How to manage your finances when you are married One of the most popular questions I get from clients and readers is this: how should we combine finances after we get married? And to be honest, thereâs no one-size-fits-all answer to that question. But itâs an important question to answer for yourself and your spouse. How exactly you approach this subject will depend on you and your partner, but these are the things you should do to figure it out.Talk, Talk, TalkI hope you had the money talk before you got married, but if not, you must do it now. Money touches every area of our lives, so itâs imperative to talk about it with our partners. Talk about how your parents dealt with money while you were growing up. Talk about what fears, habits, and beliefs that created in your life. Talk about any money mistakes youâve made it the past. Talk about your money habits and if and when you go overboard with your spending. Once you do this, you can be open and honest in your approach to managing money together.Get TransparentIf youâr e going to be sharing your life, you should be transparent about what that life includes. That means getting really honest about any debt that either of you owe, any big money mistakes youâve made in the past, and more. You should both shareSet Joint GoalsMoney is much easier to talk about when you frame it around your goals. It reminds you why youâre sticking to a budget, which makes it more motivating, and sometimes easier. Setting joint goals is even more important, so that you both know what youâre working towards. It also will allow you to act as a team when it comes to your money, because â¦Decide If/How to Combine AccountsEvery couple handles money differently. Gone are the days when the husband earned the money and handled all the financial decisions. Gone are the days when women werenât even allowed to have their own bank accounts. Now, as marriages look different than they used to, and women are becoming the main breadwinners, there are more options for handling m oney.I personally like to have some of my own money. I think itâs important to at least have your own personal emergency savings account in case you need to leave a relationship. For Dan and me, we each have our own checking and savings accounts, but we also have joint accounts. Most of our expenses and spending come out of our joint accounts, but we also have our own money to use as we please.Assign the Money Point PersonWho is going to be the one to pay the bills? Whose name is going to be on the accounts? Sometimes, there is an obvious person who is more financially inclined or organized. Or perhaps, one of you hates managing money less than the other. Maybe there are ways to split up the money tasks. Make sure itâs an open conversation with a clear, defined plan so that no one is confused or resentful afterwards.Set Some Ground RulesThis isnât a step to take in order to control your partner. But you should both be on the same page about what is acceptable or not. Is there a sum of money that is too large to make the purchase unilaterally? How do you want to approach each other to discuss a large purchase? How to do you want to make decisions about household income and expenses?Meet With a Financial ExpertDan and I recently met with a friend of mine who is a financial planner. Yes, Iâm a financial coach but Iâm not an investment expert, nor do I know much about things like life insurance. Now that weâre getting married, I wanted to make sure weâre on the right track financially. This is especially true since Iâm not putting as much away for retirement this year, as Iâve taken a big pay cut by quitting my day job. I wanted to make sure Iâd still be secure in the future while taking a break for a year or two. We got great advice for retirement savings, and learned a lot about life insurance. I feel a lot more confident and secure about ourHave Regular Money DatesJust like you canât set and forget a budget, you canât set and forget join t financial goals. You have to check in and make sure things are still on track, and see if there are any tweaks that need to be made. Set up a regular day and time that you will sit down with your partner and review your finances. Go over your banking and credit card statements, compare those to the budget that you set up. Is there anything that isnât working? Does anything need to be tweaked? Chances are, the answer is yes!Be realistic when you schedule these dates. Donât plan on having the conversation on Sunday evening if you know youâre always scrambling to prepare for the week and will likely skip the conversation. Perhaps you can pair the date with something fun, or give yourselves a reward after you have the conversation. Continuing to do this will keep you open and transparent about money, and will allow you to make changes when needed. This article was originally published on MaggieGermano.com.

Marine Corps Scout Sniper MOS 0317
Marine Corps Scout Sniper MOS 0317 Marine Corps Scout Sniper MOS 0317 The U.S. Marines Scout Sniper (0317) is a secondary military occupational specialty (MOS) open to Marines with certain qualifications. As with all secondary MOS, you cant enter directly from boot camp into this job, but the Marine Corps has considered changing scout sniper to a primary MOS due to declining enrollment. Qualifying as a Marine Corps Scout Sniper Marines in MOS 0317 must already be qualified in Marine Infantry or Marine RECON units, trained to use precision rifle fire at selected targets from a concealed position. These actions are typically accomplished in any environment and long range with little support from other Marine or military assets. In support of combat operations, scout snipers are highly regarded in times of war, as they are skilled in enemy surveillance, stealth and concealment, and marksmanship. Snipers can be easily deployed in urban population centers and effectively engage individual targets without collateral damage to civilian lives or property. Marine Sniper Platoons A Marine scout sniper platoon consists of eight to 10 scout sniper teams and reports directly to the battalion commander. This platoon of marines may provide support to maneuver units or may operate independently. Scout snipers are tasked with the main mission of providing surveillance operations in order to gain intelligence on the enemy and the terrain. Scout Snipers include: Spotters, who detect, observe and confirm sniper targets. They are also tasked with calculating the range and wind conditions on a given target and conducting reconnaissance and surveillance missions.Snipers, who deliver long-range precision fires on selected targets. They also conduct reconnaissance missions and enemy and terrain surveillance. Secondary Mission of Marine Scout Snipers Scout snipers also gather information for intelligence purposes. They participate in activities designed to deny the enemy freedom of movement by targeting enemy leaders, weapons operators, radiomen, observers, messengers, and other key personnel. Scout snipers targets may include command and control equipment, light armored vehicles, air defense radar, and missile launchers that require precision rifle fire to neutralize. These Marines also conduct close reconnaissance and surveillance operations for the infantry battalion in support of the intelligence section. Training for Marine Scout Snipers While specific requirements vary by battalion, infantrymen who qualify to be trained as scout snipers may be selected after passing their USMC physical fitness and combat fitness training. These Marines must first serve for a time in the battalion scout-sniper platoon, and a Marine may be sent to the formal scout sniper course to earn the official scout sniper MOS. To be selected by a battalion to join the scout sniper platoon, a Marine must earn the rank of Lance Corporal and complete the 79-day scout sniper course at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia. The course includes how to care for gear, field craft, stealth, concealment, and shooting accuracy. Job Requirements for Marine Scout Snipers To qualify for this job, Marines need a score of 100 or higher on the general technical (GT) segment of the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) tests and be qualified as an expert rifleman. In addition, youll need vision correctable to 20/20 in both eyes to serve as a Marine scout sniper, and be eligible for a secret security clearance from the Department of Defense. The clearance process includes a background check of your character and finances, and a history of drug use or alcohol abuse may be disqualifying. Scout snipers should have no history of mental illness.

These are the highest (and lowest) paying jobs in each state for 2018
These are the highest (and lowest) paying jobs in each state for 2018 These are the highest (and lowest) paying jobs in each state for 2018 Have you ever wondered which jobs in America get paid the most? One of the foundations of capitalism is that some jobs are compensated at a higher level than others. The particular jobs that are being paid more vary widely depending on a number of factors, including the current yearâs events, recent technological developments, and economic factors like recessions. However, much like the Highlander, at any particular time, there can be only one (highest paying job, that is). We were curious what those were for every state, so we looked at the BLS statistics on the subject, along with the lowest paying.Click to enlargeAlabama comes out on top with the highest paying job, orthodontist, which has a sweet annual salary of $289,740. On the other end of the spectrum, South Carolina holds the lowest paying job, baggage porters and bellhops, with an annual salary of $17,810.Based on the maps we have so far, it looks like square states (and the Midwest states in general) are the places to be f or many of these white collar positions.Top 5 highest paying jobs by state Alabama Position: Orthodontists Salary: $289,740 Florida Position: Oral Surgeons Salary: $288,450 Maine Position: Surgeons Salary: $287,030 Delaware Position: Surgeons Salary: $286,400 North Dakota Position: Anesthesiologists Salary: $286,250 Top 5 lowest paying jobs by state South Carolina Position: Baggage Porters and Bellhops Salary: $17,810 Iowa Position: Motion Picture Projectionists Salary: $17,820 Nevada Position: Gaming Dealers Salary: $18,000 North Carolina Position: Gaming Dealers Salary: $18,040 Kentucky Position: Entertainment Attendants and Related Workers, All Other Salary: $18,110 How did we figure this out? This one was fairly simple: by looking at the Bureau of Labor Statistics website, we were able to compile a list of the jobs in each state that had the highest annual salaries based on information from 2017 (The most recently available data set.). That was all it took for the highest paying jobs list. For the lowest, certain jobs did not have hourly salary ranges, and so were excluded from the ranking; besides that, the list was compiled in the same way as the highest paid list. There you have itHereâs hoping that this information helps you find what youâre looking for in your career. How to Make Your Remote Job Application Stand Out
How to Make Your Remote Job Application Stand Out How to Make Your Remote Job Application Stand Out 6Coming up with a list of reasons why you wouldnât want to work remotely these days can be challenging. Whether remote work appeals to you because you want to spend your time traveling to exotic locations and working off free Wi-Fi at a beach resort, or if you want to work from home so that youâre there when your kids get home from school, remote work opportunities are in high demand nowadays. But the large amount of people who want to work remotely means that remote jobs have gotten very competitive- especially at top companies. So, to make your remote job application stand out that means you need to bring your âA gameâ when you complete the application and send your resume and cover letter. How do you set yourself apart from the competition so that you can score that remote gig and ensure that you can spend your days working in your swimsuit or PJs? Here are some suggestions to make your remote job application stand out: 1. Highlight previous remote experience. Have you worked remotely before? If so, thatâs something you should be highlighting in your application. Not everyone is suited to working remotely. Some people get easily distracted and end up doing more housework or social media browsing than work. Others find that working remotely can be isolating and end up opting for a job with flexibility but an office where they can work when they want. Employers of remote workers are sometimes wary of hiring either of these types of employees since the first wonât get the job done and the second will lead to expensive turnover. So, if you have experience working remotely, then thatâs a great way to signal to the employer that you arenât just trying out remote work on a lark- you really love it and it works for you and the companies youâve worked for in the past. So, make sure to mention your previous remote work experience in the first paragraph of your cover letter or application. Be sure to also explain the type of work you did remotely, how you were able to benefit the companies you worked for, and why youâre eager for other remote opportunities. 2. Get reviews from previous employers. You might be a rockstar remote employee, but if youâre the only one saying it, there wonât be as much of an impact than if people who youâve worked with are also backing that up. Make sure to include references in your application of people who have worked with you previously- especially in remote capacities. You might also mention how happy they were with your work in your cover letter. Another option to get across how great you worked remotely is to ask former clients or employers to give you reviews on LinkedIn and then mention things they said about you in your cover letter. You could also mention when you list your references that there are reviews of your work available on LinkedIn as well. 3. Be timely. The problem with having people work for you remotely is that sometimes they wonât reply to you promptly and you may not always know what theyâre doing. Are they working on something else? Are they at the grocery store? Are they on the beach having fun when you need your proposal finished right away? Itâs important to build trust with a future employer even before youâre hired. Make sure to send in your application early if possible and respond promptly to any emails or other communications that the company sends to you. Your goal is to make it clear that youâre quick to respond and easy to get in touch with. That way, the potential employer wonât worry about what might happen when you work for them remotely and need to quickly get ahold of you. 4. Explain how you communicate remotely. Working remotely can be challenging because a lot of communication happens online or via email and you canât just stop by someoneâs desk to clarify things. Thatâs why you might want to address communication issues in your cover letter or on the job application. Are you available to talk anytime via phone, email, Slack, or video conferencing? Are you in a different time zone, which means you might be available earlier or later in the day? This information is important to note as it could be seen as an asset when an employer is hiring. Youâll want to emphasize your communications skills and your ability to respond in a timely manner. Having good emotional intelligence could also come in handy since it can be difficult to read tone in email correspondence. Mention anything thatâs helped you communicate more effectively while working remotely or that you think would come in handy if youâve never worked remotely before. 5. Nail the interview. Remote interviews can be a challenge since theyâre often conducted via video conference. Youâll have to sit in your house and deal with technology glitches while also trying to get across how great you are. Itâs critical that you donât take a remote interview too lightly. If it involves video, dress up and prepare just like you would for any other interview. Make sure to review questions that they might ask you, including any about how you would manage working remotely with their team. You might want to come up with some examples of how youâve reacted in certain remote working situations in the past or mention strategies that have helped you be successful while working remotely. Also, make sure that your house looks clean behind you and that you arenât interrupted by anyone in your family while youâre conducting the interview. The last thing you want is for a potential remote employer to question how youâll be able to get work done if you have a distracting space or family members or roommates who donât respect your work boundaries. 6. Remember the bottom line. Working remotely means that you wonât have a commute or need to get dressed up for work, but it doesnât mean you should take your job any less seriously. The same goes for remote job hunting. Spend time personalizing your resume for each remote job application and be sure to send a thank-you card or note after the interview. Then, if you get the job, back up your promises with your performance. Dave Rathmanner is the vice president of content for LendEDU- a marketplace and information site for financial products. 4 ways improv can help you succeed at work
4 ways improv can help you succeed at work 4 ways improv can help you succeed at work As improv comedians, the same philosophy and principles that work so well for us on stage also work very well when we apply them to our business. Here are four ways you can apply improv techniques to help you succeed at work.1. Become an active listenerEveryone thinks that to be an improviser that you have to be super quick. We hear that comment after every show: âYou guys are so quick.â We always smile and take the compliment, but itâs not really the truth. The truth is that we listen very well. And we donât just listen; we actively listen. You have to be present, you have to be in the moment, and you have to be non-judgmental. You just have to go with an idea. And the way you do that is to listen and then build on that thought. As business leaders and entrepreneurs, weâve learned that being a better listener actually makes you a better communicator. Youâve heard everyone out so youâre able to make decisions without overlooking things. Youâre not thinking of the thin g you were going to say next; youâre paying attention to whatâs happening now.In the improv world, we donât know where weâre going; we only know where weâve been. So itâs paramount that we all retain that information because itâs influencing our decisions, much like in the business world.A lot of people pride themselves on multitasking. But basically all multitasking is is doing a lot of things in an average way. When people are actively listening, theyâre retaining anywhere from 90 to 95% of the pertinent information. When theyâre multitasking, they may be retaining 40%. If youâre at work running around only retaining 40% of the information, youâre doing yourself a disservice, and youâre certainly doing everyone around you a disservice.2. Practice âyes, and . . .âThe number one rule that we have is to strike the word ânoâ and replace it with the two magic words âyes, and . . .â Itâs a philosophy, not a statement. It means that you donât judg e an idea. You agree with it by saying âyes,â and then you add your 2 cents so that it becomes a collective idea and both people have by in to its success.People are often âno, but . . .â Thereâs a lot of negativity. People will always find the problem or the reason for not doing something. But they arenât mistakes in our world; there are only disruptions from the routine. Improv forces you to solve scenarios on the fly. Weâre all about finding a work around and moving forward.Becoming a âyes, and . . .â person is like going to the gym. You have to practice it everyday and reframe your brain to not go to ânoâ first. If it has to be a âno,â so be it, but make it a considerate âno.â3. Embrace all ideasOne of the rules that we live by is that there are no wrong or bad ideas, and nobodyâs ideas are any better or worse than anyone elseâs. There are just high- and low-percentage choices. The creativity comes when you can recognize that every idea has merit. What weâve found is that sometimes those low-percentage choices end up being wonderfully creative ideas that we would have never come up with because we would have dismissed them early as wrong. These ideas get the ball rolling. When you do that within your business, you develop a culture where people realize theyâre going to be heard and that theyâre not going to be judged or shot down.Imagine how creative you would be if whatever you brought to the table, your team would build upon. Thereâs no fear involved. The freedom to create is endless.4. Empower your teamIf you practice these techniques, youâre honoring and empowering those around you, and they in turn will honor and empower you.For instance, we noticed that a lot of people were on their phones before and during our show. From our perspective as the performers on the stage, we thought it was rude. But then our technical director, who sits behind the audience and runs the lights and sound, told us that he was seeing people give us five-star reviews and tweet about the show.He suggested that instead of being angry, we should incorporate phones into the show. Now, we have people upload funny photos on our Facebook page, and we improvise from the photos. As a happy accident to this, our social media numbers are through the roof. When people think about the corporate ladder, they think that the way to get ahead is to step on whomever you need to step on. But thatâs not how we advance. The way we ascend is by making each other look good. We pull each other up.David Wilk, Frank Ford, and David Ahearn are the co-founders of the improv group Four Day Weekend and the co-authors of the upcoming book Happy Accidents: How âYes, Andâ Thinking Helps You Open Hearts, Change Minds, and Win Together in a âNo, Butâ World. As told to Kirsten Salyer.

Breadth or Expertise Which is Better For Your Career
Breadth or Expertise Which is Better For Your Career Breadth or Expertise Which is Better For Your Career I recently had a conversation with an engineering manager at Simply Hired about the pros and cons of two types of career trajectories. I was bemoaning the downsides of successive lateral career moves- where an employee moves from one role into a similar role, and performs similar tasks. Being a type A personality, I naturally assumed that people should take on different and greater duties as they move through their work life. Challenging my view, the manager asked me, âAre lateral moves really so bad? Is there really anything wrong with a person identifying what they do well and continuing to work in that capacity over a large span of their career?â We ended the conversation without me giving a concrete answer and I mulled over the question for part of the morning. I wanted to consider career strategies from different angles. To do so, I presented the question to my co-workers and received a number of thoughtful, interesting and informative responses. Before sharing the feedback, I should acknowledge that there are a few ways to consider growth and movement in careers. Growth can be measured by breadth: increasing knowledge across business segments resulting in shallow but expansive acumen. This can otherwise be described as knowing a little bit about a lot of things. Alternatively, growth can be measured by growing expertise in a narrow area of responsibility. This can otherwise be described as knowing a lot about a few things. Finally, growth can be measured by advances in professional rank, such as moving from an individual contributor role to a leadership position. This third type of career growth can be the outcome of increases in breadth or expertise. The Results Though some respondents felt strongly that either moving around functionally or staying within a defined area of specialty had greater merit, a majority of the respondents concluded that there isnât a clear-cut strategy for success. Instead, there are factors that you should consider in navigating your career. Here are some of the most common responses: 1. Greater breadth of experience makes you a more versatile and well-rounded employee. Having experience and insight from a number of different business functions can give you a more holistic perspective. It can also strengthen your ability to problem solve and innovate across an organization. One respondent noted that business activities are often multi-functional, meaning that they impact multiple groups within a single company. Having a wider outlook on various team needs, priorities and challenges, therefore, enhances oneâs sense of empathy. It can also lead to more informed thinking and decision-making. Another respondent indicated that taking on the challenge of a completely different role or function can be an opportunity to add to your range of skills: All of us come to work with strengths and weaknesses, and usually we gravitate towards roles where our strengths can shine. However, if you have the opportunity to try new roles and experience different responsibilities, you also have the ability to shore up your weaknesses. Professional development shouldnt be about doing what is easy. It should be about making yourself better! It is worth noting that having a comprehensive viewpoint can make you a great candidate for a role with significant cross-functional oversight, such as CEO, COO or General Manager. Tip: One low-risk way to get experience cross-functionally is to participate in a company rotation program, which allows you to work in different job functions for short periods of time. 2. Your strategy should be based on your long-term professional goals. Some respondents used the simple logic that the roles you take on should create a roadmap leading to your final career destination. In other words: start with where you want to end up and work your way backwards. One respondentâs feedback was: [Your career arc] really depends on your career goals. Do you want to be a VP of Engineering? Its probably better to get broader experience to be able to manage the engineering trajectory better. Want to move into Product later? Its probably better to focus on a variety of things, but only those that directly affect user experience and interface (UX and UI) design. Want to be the foremost expert on Big Data? Focus on Big Data. Dont do anything else. Tip: Identify people in roles that you aspire to and get their feedback on what decisions helped or hurt them over the course of their careers. Use this as a loose blueprint as you progress through your career path. 3. Where you are in your career informs how much job, role or function hopping is acceptable. Some respondents noted that career exploration is ideal early in an individuals career. Once an area of expertise is identified, specialization becomes ideal: In the beginning of ones career, its best to diversify your experience and skill set in order to better prepare for the various situations youll encounter during the course of your career. This will also allow you to really hone in on the type of work that you enjoy and may inherently excel at. As your career matures, it may make more sense to narrow that skill set. Conversely, a few respondents pointed out that it is becoming increasingly common for experienced workers to change roles or functions given the rapid advances or declines in a number of industries. As such, flexibility and openness to new roles throughout your career is ideal. Finally, there is the viewpoint that you are never too old, or far along in your career, to make a radical change if thatâs what you want. In the glass-half-full words of George Eliot, âIt is never too late to be what you might have been.â 4. Know yourself and do what makes you happy. At the end of the day, itâs your career, your life and ultimately your opportunity to make your mark on the world. Honestly assess your priorities, goals and preferences and then develop a plan that enables you to attain everything that is important to you. To me, it really depends on what you value. If you value variety and learning a wide array of things, then jumping around will be beneficial to you. On the other hand, Im under the assumption that staying in the same career path with lead to more stability (and money). If you understand whats important to you, then you can take the approach that fits you best. 5. Make sure you understand and can articulate how each choice fits into the story of your professional life. One respondent pointed out that your professional experiences make up the story of your career and that anyone reading this story, such as a recruiter or a hiring manager, will want to see a narrative that demonstrates growth and development. If you decide to make radical moves over the course of your career, know in advance what you are hoping to accomplish from the new experiences, and subsequently, what you learned or gained from taking on divergent paths. Without a strong rationale to back up your choices, you risk looking like a dilettante. Finally, I wanted to share a quotation from a Simply Hired employee about the business need for either type of employee: Its hard to say that one is better than the other, though they are definitely different. But I think both kinds of people are needed. We need people who are well rounded, who know a little bit about a lot of things. We also (and equally) need people who know a great deal about a few things and can be the knowledge-authorities on specific subjects and disciplines. Both are necessary, both are to be strived for. To complete this thought, I would add a quotation from Abraham Lincoln that states, âWhatever you are, be a good one.â No matter which of the two tactics you ultimately choose, be sure to work hard and always strive to be better, however you have chosen to define it, everyday.
